Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

Find out more about staying healthy while travelling.

Thank you for a wonderful school year!

Principal's Message

What a wonderful year it has been here at Sefton Infants School! I can hardly believe that we have already reached the end of the 2019 school year. It seems like just a couple of months ago that our new kindergarten students were walking nervously and excitedly into their classrooms for the first time. I remember them working out the mysteries of their lunchboxes and the bubblers while their new year 1 and year 2 friends showed them the ropes of big school.

Each and every one of the students from Kindergarten to Year 2 of Sefton Infants School have made such growth and progress since that first school day of this year. They have all grown in confidence and independence across a range of learning areas in the classroom and playground. Well done to you all!

I would like to take this opportunity to give thanks to all who have contributed to individual student achievements, as well as our collective school achievements.

Firstly, thank you to our wonderful students. Thank you for your energy, your humour and for inspiring me, your teachers and your parents to be the best people that we can be and for giving us hope for a brighter future world.

Thank you to our parent and community members. Thank you for your support for all things ‘Sefton’ and for giving us the opportunity to work in partnership with you to give the greatest gift of all, for all of our children - the gift of education.

Lastly but certainly not least, I wish to express my deepest gratitude to the teachers, administration staff and School Learning Support Officers at mighty SIS. I am truly blessed to work with such an amazing team of people who are compassionate, caring and highly skilled in the science and art of teaching. It is not just our students that learn from our teachers. I, too, learn from our fabulous staff every day. Our staff members are deeply invested in finding and nurturing the immense potential in all of our students. To do this takes determination, hard work and a commitment to the pursuit of excellence. I thank all of our staff members for investing so much of themselves and their tremendous effort in teaching at Sefton Infants School and the future of Australia.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to our schoo community. Wishing everyone a safe and relaxing holiday. I am already looking forward to many more amazing learning adventures in 2020.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Book yourself in for Reading Hour

This Australian Reading Hour, encourage your child to discover or rekindle their love of a good book. Take the time to learn, escape and relax on Thursday 19 September and read for one hour.

Get involved at home

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Join in from the classroom

Bestselling children’s author and illustrator Matt Stanton will broadcast live to primary school children across the country from the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday 17 September. We invite schools to register for the livestream of this free event.

Stanton’s author talk is among more than 140 events happening across the country involving more than 50 authors.

Take the Book Swap Challenge

We all have favourite books that we come back to again and again.

To help celebrate Reading Hour take our Book Swap Challenge. We want students, teachers, staff and parents to try reading something new on the day. To get involved, simply pair up with someone and swap your favourite books.

Take a photo and tag it with #ReadingHour so we can see how you got involved.

Video – #ReadingHour authors talk about their favourite place to read

Duration: 0:38

Looking for a good spot to open a book? We asked authors Benjamin Law, Morris Gleitzman, Jacqueline Harvey and Mick Elliott about their favourite place to read.

Child Protection Parent Session

During Term 3, all of our K-2 students will be participating in important Child Protection lessons as part of their studies in Health and Personal Development. Lessons in Child Protection are a mandatory part of the NSW Curriculum. Child Protection education aims to help children to learn ways to protect themselves from sexual abuse as well as other forms of abuse, including bullying. The children are taught strategies to respond to unsafe situations and how to network with trusted adults.

Sefton infants School will be holding a parent session to provide more information about the learning content that is part of Child Protection lessons for students K-2. The workshop will be held in the school library from 9-10am on Monday 19 August.

Child Protection education is even more effective if parents support their children’s learning in this area. We hope that our parents and carers can attend this valuable information session.

Enrolling Now for 2020

Applications for Preschool or Kindergarten enrolment for 2020 at Sefton Infants School are now available from the school office.

Preschool enrolments

To apply for Preschool enrolment, your child must be 4 years of age by 31st July 2020. It is strongly suggested that your child already be 4 years of age at the commencement of 2020 so that they are ready for a preschool setting. Sefton Infants Preschool is very popular. Student places for our preschool are limited to 40 children per year, therefore criteria for priority of enrolment are followed. This means priority is given to families who live within the school boundary, as well as to older children who must enrol in school the following year. Please refer to the Preschool Enrolment Policy on our school website for further information. It is also a government requirement that all children who attend all preschools must be up-to-date with their immunisation vaccinations.

Kindergarten enrolments

To apply for Kindergarten enrolment, your child must be 5 years of age by 31st July 2020. It is strongly advised that your child already be 5 years and turning 6 years of age in 2020 to start Kindergarten as he/she will then be more likely to be ready for formal schooling. Legally, children do not need to start school until the year that they are turning 6 years of age. By this age, they are more mature and ready for the academic, physical and social demands of school.

Enrolment criteria

In addition to age requirements, priority enrolment criteria does apply, including initial places being offered to children living in the school’s local boundary area and/or whether they have siblings already enrolled at our school. Thank you for sharing this information with family and friends who may have children ready to start their Preschool and Kindergarten education next year. The early childhood education programs that run at Sefton Infants School are highly regarded in the local community. Student places are limited, so we recommend completing application forms as soon as possible.

Please visit our school office to collect an application form or to seek any more information about Sefton Infants School and Preschool.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

The School Swimming Scheme is an extremely worthwhile program organised by the Department of Education for students in Government schools to learn water safety and basic swimming skills. All students in Years 1 and 2 will be participating in the School Swimming Scheme from Monday 1 April to Friday 12 April. Each school day in this period, the students will walk to and from Birrong Leisure Centre under the diligent supervision of their teachers to participate in swimming and water safety lessons led by trained swimming teachers.

The water safety and swimming lessons will take place from approximately 11:45am to 1:30pm. The students will be undertaking their normal school studies and activities before and after the swimming lessons.

The children need to wear their swimming costume under their school uniform in the morning for ease of changing for their lesson. They will also need to bring a towel and underwear to change into after their lesson.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

For more information, check out the department’s pedestrian safety advice for students, parents and carers.

Happy holidays!

Thank you for another great year at our wonderful school! It has certainly been a fantastic year of learning at Sefton Infants School and Preschool. Our great student learning outcomes only take place because of the collective work of a large number of people.

There are our supportive parents who teach more to their children through their day to day dealings than we ever could in the short time they are in our care. There are the wonderful, dedicated School Learning Support Officers who go well beyond their call of duty to support our students and teachers.

There is the highly capable administration staff ensuring the smooth running of the school, providing answers to parents, organising the resources required for learning to take place and maintaining the grounds of the school.

There are the fantastic, caring and professional teachers who spend countless hours preparing and delivering engaging and high quality lessons to bring out the best in our students.

Last but not least, there are our students who make our school such a vibrant and friendly place to teach and learn. Our students certainly bring us all such joy and also teach us lessons everyday. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of you for all the cooperative team work that goes into making Sefton Infants School the successful and harmonious school that it is.

The end of the school year is also a time when we bid farewell to many of our graduating students. It is a time of mixed emotions - sad to see our wonderful students leave, but also excitement and happiness at the thought of the new adventures awaiting them in their next chapter of education. Best wishes to all of our Preschool and Year 2 students and their families who will be moving on to new schools.

We wish all of our students and their families a very merry Christmas along with a happy and safe summer holiday. We are already looking forward to many more learning adventures in 2019.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.
